Aggregate funded ratio of US corporate pension plans up slightly in August

RELATED TOPICS

The aggregate funded ratio for US corporate pension plans increased by 0.2 percentage points to end the month of August at 76.2 per cent, narrowing its year-to-date decline to 5.1 percentage points, according to Wilshire Consulting.

The monthly change in funding resulted from a larger decrease in liability values of 0.3 per cent that was partially offset by a 0.1 per cent decrease in asset values.

The year-to-date decrease in funding is the result of a 15 per cent increase in liability values.

“Asset values decreased in August due to benefit payments more than offsetting a slight uptick in overall asset return during the month,” says Ned McGuire (pictured), vice president and a member of the pension risk solutions group of Wilshire Consulting. “The Wilshire 5000 Total Market Index gained 0.3 per cent during the month. Rising corporate bond yields used to value pension liabilities decreased liability values slightly in August.”

Wilshire Consulting assists in ensuring secure and safe retirements for approximately 49 million Americans including those participating in some of the nation’s largest corporate and public retirement plans.
