AlphaQ – August 2016

RELATED TOPICS

The August issue of any financial magazine usually involves something a little lighthearted and we bring you a story on investing in classic cars to take your mind off Brexit for a moment or two. Ferrari LaFerrari anyone? Alex Prindiville of Prindiville Cars reports that the price on this has gone from GBP1 million to GBP2.3 million in a year.

But there is still plenty that is serious to read in this issue of AlphaQ – each investment story these days seems to have a post- the-vote disclaimer but one investment manager who dismisses the event as a concussion to the UK economy is Dr Savvas Savouri, Chief Economist and Partner at London-based Toscafund Asset Management, who compares today’s situation to 1992, when the UK was pushed out of the ERM.

Our regular columnist, Randeep Grewal, also takes a look at Brexit in his thoughts on ‘almost’ as in when claims are ‘almost’ true. He quotes Ronald Reagan’s motto ‘trust but verify’ and adapts it to our times, particularly apt with a new US presidential race gathering speed. Randeep recommends: ‘Almost trust but always verify’ as he points out that ‘almost’ is not the same as ‘all’.

Elsewhere in the issue, we look at cybersecurity, an issue that has been described by the FBI as the biggest crime wave in history. We ask leading practitioners in the field where the most recent risks lie and what can be done to overcome them as cyber threats move out of the basements of family homes and the work of the so-called ‘script kiddies’ and into organised offices and businesses, situated just beyond the reach of international law.

Enjoy the issue,
