AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company (AXA Equitable) has appointed Jeffrey J Hurd as Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective 2 April, 2018.

Hurd will join both the AXA Equitable and AXA Equitable Holdings Executive Committees, reporting to AXA Equitable CEO Mark Pearson. Reporting to Hurd will be Chief Human Resources Officer Marine de Boucaud, Chief Information Officer Mike Healy and Chief Transformation Officer Adrienne Johnson. The Transformation Office encompasses Operations, Data and Analytics, Procurement, Real Estate and oversight of Strategic Taskforces. Hurd will also have responsibility for a reorganised Corporate Communications organisation.

“Jeff brings extensive experience from his impressive track record of over 24 years across insurance and asset management and in leading teams to successfully execute significant change programs,” says Pearson. “I am delighted to have such a well-respected leader join the team at this important time for the organisation as we prepare for our listing.”

Hurd joins AXA Equitable from American International Group, Inc. (AIG), where he most recently served as executive vice president and chief operating officer. Hurd joined AIG in 1998, and served in various leadership positions throughout his nearly 20 years at the company, including AIG deputy general counsel, senior vice president and AIG chief administrative officer, head of asset management restructuring and executive vice president and chief human resources officer. Hurd also served as a member of various enterprise governance committees and subsidiary boards, including the post-IPO board of AIA Group Ltd, a top insurance company in Southeast Asia.

Hurd began his career as an associate at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in 1993, where he specialised in mergers and acquisitions, private equity, strategic investments and joint ventures. In this role, he spent one year in Tokyo with leading Japanese law firm Mori Sogo.

Hurd received his Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from New York University School of Law in 1993; his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science, magna cum laude, from Union College in 1989; and studied political science in German language at the Freie Universitӓt in Berlin, Germany, 1987-1988.

“I’m excited to join AXA Equitable and work closely with Mark and the teams as the company embarks on an exciting new year in 2018,” Hurd says. “I admire the company’s long, deep-rooted history and commitment to its clients. The employees’ and AXA Advisors financial professionals’ dedication to providing superior service and helping clients live better lives is unmatched.”
