RELATED TOPICS

AXA Investment Managers – Real Assets has appointed Mark Gilligan as head of infrastructure equity, effective from 3 October.

Based in London, Gilligan (pictured) will report to Ruulke Bagijn, global head of real assets private equity at AXA IM – Real Assets, and will have responsibility for the infrastructure equity team.

Gilligan has over 20 years’ experience in the infrastructure and resources sectors and joins AXA IM – Real Assets from UBS Global Asset Management where he has been since 2007. At UBS, he was head of European infrastructure and was both responsible for undertaking and managing infrastructure investments across Europe and integral to the raising of two global infrastructure funds which secured EUR2.6 billion of capital.

Before joining UBS, Gilligan spent 10 years as a lawyer at Mallesons Stephen Jacques (now Kings & Wood Mallesons) in Sydney, Australia, where he advised primarily natural resources and infrastructure clients in both the public and private sectors on corporate law and mergers and acquisitions. Before retraining as lawyer, he was an engineering geologist for six years at Groundwater Technology and ERM (Environmental Resources Management) in Sydney where he undertook environmental impact assessments and advised on project design for coal-mines, motorways and other infrastructure projects.

AXA IM – Real Assets has been active in the infrastructure sector since 2013, when it received a EUR10 billion mandate from the AXA Group to invest in this market, of which circa EUR3 billion has been already invested in infrastructure debt.

Bagijn says: “We have a clear ambition to expand our level of equity investments into the infrastructure sector. This allows us to offer our clients an increasingly diversified portfolio of long-term debt and equity investments and is key to become a global leader in the management of real assets, as well as being in line with our 360 degree approach to investing. Mark has extensive experience at a senior level in raising capital for and investing in infrastructure, which will be invaluable to the ongoing evolution of our platform and I am very pleased to welcome him to the team.”
