Blue Diamond Asset Management has appointed Erik Valtonen – the former chief investment officer of the EUR26bn Swedish pension fund Tredje AP-fonden (AP3) – as chief executive officer.

Valtonen (pictured) also joins Blue Diamond’s advisory board.

Valtonen, who is also joinng Blue Diamond’s advisory board, spent more than a decade at AP3, serving as CIO for the final three and half years of his time with the company.

Valtonen left in 2011 to establish his own consultancy business, from whence he joined Blue Diamond. Prior to AP3, he worked at Svenska Handelsbanken in fixed income and fixed income derivatives in Helsinki, London and Stockholm.

Valtonen says: “I am thrilled to be joining such a dynamic, creative investment business. Blue Diamond’s culture of placing its clients’ needs at the heart of product development and grappling with the issues institutional investors face attracted me to move from an advisory role to a CEO position.  I look forward to using my knowledge as an institutional investor to broaden Blue Diamond’s investment proposition and steer the firm as it enters its next phase of growth.”

Blue Diamond board member Angelo Calvello says: “Erik joins us with substantial experience in quantitative investing, derivatives, portfolio construction and management, risk budgeting, and governance. This experience, along with his understanding of our business, will allow him to immediately contribute to our current success and help us build a sustainable, robust business for the future.  We are delighted to attract someone of Erik’s calibre and track record to our talented team.”
