BTG Pactual has hired Rodrigo Valdés as chief economist for the Andean region.

Valdés (pictured) is currently deputy director of the IMF’s European department and was director of research and chief economist at the Chilean Central Bank from 2002 to 2007.

He will assume the role in January 2013.

“Rodrigo Valdés is a well-renowned, respected economist with an outstanding professional and academic track record,” says Eduardo Loyo, partner and chief economist at BTG Pactual. “We are very excited to enhance and develop our team by hiring Rodrigo.”

Valdés will work out of Santiago and will head the macroeconomic analysis team already in place at the bank’s offices in Santiago and Medellín.

Before joining BTG Pactual, Valdés will step down from his position at the IMF, where he has worked since 2010. In this three-year period at the IMF, he also served as deputy director of the Western Hemisphere department and mission chief for the US. Before joining the IMF, he was Barclays Capital’s chief economist for Latin America (2008-09) and the chief adviser to the Chilean Finance Minister (2000-01).

“I look forward to joining the BTG Pactual research team and helping further consolidate its world-class macroeconomic analysis in the Andean countries,” says Valdés.
