CANDRIAM, a global multi-asset manager focused on sustainable and responsible investments, has named Paulo Salazar, Senior Emerging Markets Equity Analyst and Fund Manager, as Co-Head of the firm’s Emerging Markets Equities Team.

Salazar succeeds Jan Boudewijns, an industry veteran and the team’s leader for 18 years, who plans to retire after a career of almost 40 years in finance, and more than 35 years at CANDRIAM.

Salazar and Boudewijns will run the team together until the first half of 2022 to facilitate a smooth transition of duties. They will both report into Vincent Hamelink, Chief Investment Officer at CANDRIAM. Meanwhile, Philip Screve, Deputy Head of Emerging Markets Equities, who joined the team in 1997, will continue to oversee the Emerging Markets Equity strategy. Lamine Saidi, Senior Fund Manager, who joined the team in 2005, will continue to manage the Sustainable Emerging Markets Equity strategy.

Emerging markets equity is a strategically important area for CANDRIAM, with current assets under management of approximately EUR4.4 billion as at end of March 2021. The firm recently strengthened the team with the appointments of Galina Besedina, Senior Analyst and Fund Manager, Vanessa Zhao, Senior Equity Analyst in 2020, and of Vivek Dhawan, Client Portfolio Manager and Equity Analyst in 2021.

Salazar says: “I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with and learn from Jan for over the last six years and look forward to working with him over the coming year to make the transition seamless for our clients. As we transition leadership of the team, my main priority will be to maintain and sustain a proven investment process while building on the intellectual capital developed by Jan and our team over several decades. Jan’s departure next year will leave behind a legacy of consistent value creation for clients, which is a track record I will seek to emulate.”

Boudewijns, Co-Head of Emerging Markets Equities says: “I am delighted to be transitioning my leadership and responsibilities to Paulo. He is a vastly experienced and valued member of the team, who is focused on delivering consistent and strong long-term performances. The combination of Paulo and Philip Screve driving forward a hugely talented, experienced and multi-cultural team will provide the essential ingredients for ongoing success. I am looking forward to working even more closely with Paulo over the next 12 months as we transition responsibilities. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our clients and the team for their support over so many years.”

Vincent Hamelink, Chief Investment Officer, adds: “Jan has built incredible emerging markets equities business and under Paulo’s new leadership the team will continue to deliver strong performance to our clients. On behalf of everyone at CANDRIAM, we want to thank Jan for his significant contribution to the firm’s success, and particularly his dedication to emerging markets equities. We look forward to working with him during this transition period and wish him well in his retirement.”
