Emerging market bond funds continue to lead the market

RELATED TOPICS

Emerging market bond fund assets have grown by 53 per cent over the first seven months of the year in Europe, reaching EUR96.4bn by the end of July, a report by Lipper shows.

This comes on the back of an impressive 2009, when assets swelled by 42 per cent, rising from EUR44.5bn to EUR63.2bn.

Emerging market products account for 29 per cent of all flows into bond funds from European investors in 2010, with a further 27 per cent moving into global products.

The scale of the performance impact can be seen with record-breaking sales of EUR25.2bn from European investors into emerging market bond funds accounting for a quarter of asset growth in 2010.

The number of new emerging market bond fund launches fell in both 2008 and 2009, although 2010 is on course to return to previous highs.

Bond funds restricted to Eastern Europe have fared comparatively less well. Sales of EUR1.3bn so far in 2010 suggest these funds are on course for their first positive year of flows since 2005.
