FMG, a specialist in emerging markets investments, has appointed Joe Portelli as the new managing director/chief investment officer of FMG Malta.

Arild Johansen, FMG partner, says: “I am proud to announce the appointment of Joe Portelli. We are looking forward to a longstanding and prosperous relationship. His practical experience and his academic prowess are vital to FMG at this crucial time when new opportunities emerge overnight in this fast changing world.”

Portelli says: “I am excited to join FMG at this time of my career. FMG is the expert in spotting and monetising frontier and emerging markets. They have unique in-depth experience and their instinct of timing is near perfect. The recent launch of FMG’s Mongolia fund is a good example.”

Portelli has more than 25 years experience of working in the financial sector with a particular focus on foreign exchange and futures trading. Most recently he was assistant portfolio manager at Liongate Capital Management and was jointly responsible for the management of USD3bn. He is the founder of the Institute of Investment Analysis (Malta) and lectures at the University of Malta on hedge fund analysis and strategies and trading futures and options. Beforehand he worked for Goldman Sachs, Nomura Securities International and Bank of America.
