Global digital assets: June ETF and ETP review

RELATED TOPICS

A monthly column on the global crypto markets and ETF/ETP flows, brought to you by CoinDesk Indices, Trackinsight and ETF Express.

Joshua de Vos, Research Lead, CoinDesk, writes that June 2026 extended and sharply accelerated the digital-asset correction, with global crypto ETP outflows reaching USD4.31 billion as total assets under management fell to USD108.6 billion from USD141.1 billion in May; a combined effect of elevated redemptions and broad-based price declines across the asset class.

According to TrackInsight data, US-listed vehicles drove the majority of outflows while non-US markets produced a more divergent picture, with several European domiciles and Canada continuing to absorb capital against the tide of American redemptions.

The CoinDesk 20 Index (CD20), which captures a diversified cross-section of the top 20 digital assets, fell 21.2 per cent in June, closing the month at 1,602.48; a sharp deterioration from May’s 1.11 per cent decline. The more concentrated CoinDesk 5 Index (CD5) declined 20.5 per cent, closing at 958.47. The near-parallel performance of the two indices, separated by just 0.7 percentage points, indicates broad-based pressure distributed uniformly across the market cap spectrum, with large-cap assets offering no relative shelter from the wider decline.

Asset flows

According to data from TrackInsight, outflows were overwhelmingly concentrated in bitcoin-linked products, which accounted for approximately 94 per cent of total global redemptions, while altcoin categories posted net inflows for a third consecutive month, extending a pattern of structural demand for dedicated altcoin vehicles regardless of broader market conditions.

●      Bitcoin: BTC-linked products recorded net outflows of USD4.06 billion, while total category AUM stood at USD86.9 billion. Bitcoin’s commanding share of global crypto ETP market share was reflected in its disproportionate role as the primary exit vehicle during June’s correction; outflows from BTC-linked products represented approximately 94 per cent of all global redemptions.

●      Ethereum: Ether-linked products experienced net outflows of USD348.1 million, ending June with USD11.4 billion in aggregate AUM. While absolute ETH outflows declined from May’s USD523.9 million, BTC’s outflow rate on a flow-relative-to-AUM basis exceeded ETH’s in June; a reversal of the pattern seen across recent months where Ethereum led proportional redemptions.

●      Multi-asset: Diversified baskets recorded net inflows of USD79.3 million, with total AUM of USD1.95 billion, reversing May’s USD11.1 million outflow and returning the category to positive territory.

●      Altcoins: The standout altcoin development was the debut of Hyperliquid-linked products: the Grayscale Hyperliquid Staking ETF (HYPG) attracted USD125.2 million and the Bitwise Hyperliquid ETF (BHYP) recorded USD61.7 million, for combined inflows of USD186.9 million; the highest of any altcoin category in June. XRP-linked products drew USD120.0 million in inflows (AUM: USD2.01 billion), continuing three consecutive months of inflows. Solana recorded USD19.8 million (AUM: USD2.14 billion), now positive for a fifth consecutive month.

Flows by Geography

●      Americas: Net outflows of approximately USD4.35 billion, driven by US-listed products (USD4.46 billion in redemptions) and partially offset by Canada (USD114.2 million in inflows). US-domiciled ETFs maintained USD90.9 billion in AUM, representing over 83 per cent of global market share.

●      Europe: Net inflows of approximately USD49.7 million, a continuation of the pattern of non-US markets absorbing capital during periods of US-driven outflows. Switzerland led at USD83.1 million (AUM: USD3.47 billion), followed by Jersey at USD40.2 million (AUM: USD3.55 billion) and Liechtenstein at USD6.0 million; partially offset by outflows from Ireland (USD65.0 million) and Germany (USD13.7 million).

●       APAC: Net outflows of approximately USD12.4 million, driven by Hong Kong (USD19.0 million in redemptions) and partially offset by Australia (USD5.8 million in inflows). Regional participation remained modest.

Flows by currency

●      USD: USD-denominated products recorded USD4.45 billion in net outflows, while maintaining USD102.1 billion in AUM, the dominant share of global crypto ETP assets.

●      CAD: CAD-denominated products recorded USD128.8 million in net inflows, with total AUM of USD3.60 billion.

●      EUR / SEK / AUD: EUR-denominated products recorded USD6.2 million in outflows (AUM: USD1.03 billion), SEK added USD10.2 million (AUM: USD1.23 billion), and AUD added USD5.8 million (AUM: USD544 million).

Outlook

June’s headline outflow figure reflects an unusually concentrated pattern: US-listed products shed USD4.46 billion, but this coexists with continued positive altcoin inflows for a third consecutive month, the full debut of Hyperliquid staking ETFs that attracted a combined USD186.9 million during the year’s worst outflow month, and a gainers list again dominated by leveraged and tactical products rather than broad institutional retreat. The geographic divergence also continued; Switzerland, Jersey, and Canada collectively absorbed over USD237 million against US redemptions of USD4.46 billion.

Global Open interest on centralised exchanges fell 25.2 per cent to USD81.2 billion, signalling significant deleveraging across derivatives markets; combined CEX spot and derivatives volumes rose 13.0 per cent to USD4.99 trillion, the first monthly increase after four consecutive declines, suggesting a possible reversal of spot trading activity even amid falling prices. Whether June marks the outflow bottom will depend on bitcoin’s ability to hold its current range and whether the resumption in exchange volumes translates into a return of directional conviction among allocators.
