Horizon Kinetics and SBI launch Japan Founders Equity Fund

RELATED TOPICS

Horizon Kinetics has partnered with SBI Asset Management to launch the Japan Founders Equity Fund, providing investors with daily liquidity with a focus on investing in the publicly traded equity of Japanese businesses that are presently managed by the company’s original founders.

An important element to the fund’s investment philosophy is the significant alignment of interest between shareholders and management as the fund generally invests in companies where founders have retained all of their equity investments in the organisation.

“We are pleased to partner with SBI Asset Management, a leading asset manager in Japan, to create a fund that gives access to the equity of founder-operator companies in Japan where management and shareholder interests are the same. Our investment team has spent significant time and effort researching the benefits of investing alongside owner-operator companies globally and Japan is an exceptional region for this investment approach. Our research shows that Japanese companies run by their original founders provide excellent long-term returns given the personal stake management has in ensuring the success of their organisations. We believe founder management teams are an undervalued intangible asset that most investors intuitively understand but don’t know how to access,” says Doug Kramer, chief executive officer of Horizon Kinetics.

“Japanese investors are looking for prudent, logical, and understandable ways to get back into the Japanese equity markets. The Japan Founders Equity Fund, based on Horizon Kinetics’ research, will resonate with Japanese retail investors. Investing alongside the likes of Keiichiro Takahara who founded Unicharm Corp and Masayoshi Son who founded Softbank Corp. makes enormous sense for long-term investors. We are very excited to bring unique ideas to our investors,” says Yasuaki Kogure, president and CEO of SBI Asset Management.
