MFS Investment Management (MFS) has appointed Kelly Tran as managing director of UK and Ireland institutional sales.

Tran will be responsible for driving the growth of MFS’ UK and Ireland institutional business. She will focus on promoting MFS’ broad range of fixed income and equity capabilities to UK institutions, including local governments, corporate pension funds, charities, insurance companies, fiduciary managers, and UK consultants.

With 15 years’ industry experience, Tran joins from Newton Investment Management where she served as Head of UK institutional sales & sustainability commercial leader. She was responsible for business development and relationship management activities in the UK institutional market. In addition to these responsibilities, she was a member of Newton Responsible Investment Strategy Group and led all the commercial aspects to successfully develop and build sustainable investment solutions to help meet clients’ needs. Prior to this, she worked for JP Morgan Private Bank in London as an investor within the emerging markets team, providing custom-made investment solutions through both investment management and advisory services to ultra-high-net worth clients.

Based in London, she reports to Maddi Forrester, global head of consultant relations for MFS Investment Management, and will work closely with MFS’ existing UK sales and relationship management team.

Forrester says: ‘With the appointment of Kelly, we have added a senior industry expert with a wealth of experience to help us execute on our growth plan for the UK and Ireland institutional business. Her in-depth knowledge and passion for sustainable investing will be key in helping us successfully deliver on our company-wide objectives. This is an important hire for our business and reinforces our commitment to serving institutional clients and consultants across the region with best-in-class investment solutions underpinned by our company-wide focus on sustainability.

‘In recent years, MFS has invested in building its fixed income business outside of the United States, and today we have a team of 15 investment professionals based in London, led by Pilar Gomez-Bravo, director of fixed income, Europe. MFS has a long history of fixed income investing. In 1970, we established our fixed income group, and we launched one of the first municipal bond funds in 1976. We believe what sets us apart from other fixed income managers is our traditional approach, focusing on rigorously researched credit to help deliver the essentials of income potential, diversification, and risk management for clients,’ she adds.

Tran is a diversity, equity, and inclusion champion. She is an Ambassador for the Diversity Project and Reboot, which are cross-company organisations championing a more inclusive culture within the savings and investment profession. She also sits on the Volunteer Steering Committee of the CFA UK. In addition to these roles, she is school governor, chair of Finance & Resources and Pay Committee for a school currently requiring improvement by Ofsted in East London.

Tran says: “I’m delighted to join MFS as this stage of their ambitious growth strategy for the UK and Ireland institutional market. I strongly believe in MFS’ stance on sustainability and its commitment to create value responsibly for our clients. I’m committed to working with consultants and serving institutional clients’ complex needs, expanding the client base, and developing deep relationships with prospects looking for long-term investment solutions.”

MFS has a long track record of serving clients in the UK and Ireland and has approximately USD10 billion in assets under management across the region as at 30 September 2021. Its global assets under management for the same period stand at USD657.5 billion.
