MoFo adds global privacy and cybersecurity partner to New York team

RELATED TOPICS

Law firm Morrison & Foerster (MoFo) has appointed Kristen Mathews as a partner in the firm’s New York office.

Mathews joins the firm’s market-leading Global Privacy + Data Security Group, which is comprised of more than 60 lawyers across the United States, Europe, and Asia. She has focused her global practice on data privacy and cybersecurity for more than 20 years and is consistently recognised as a leading lawyer in the space.  Ms. Mathews comes to Morrison & Foerster from Proskauer Rose, where she served as head of its Privacy + Cybersecurity Group.

Among other things, Ms. Mathews’ extensive data privacy and cybersecurity experience includes advising clients on complying with data laws, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA); protecting data in critical transactional matters, such as in M&A deals; and preventing, preparing for, and responding to cybersecurity breaches. She also provides counsel on direct marketing compliance, and defense of claims and online, telematics, and employee and workplace privacy. Ms. Mathews represents clients in a broad range of industries, including technology, finance, retail, consumer goods, health, insurance, media, education, auto, utilities, sports, and hospitality.

“Kristen is an exceptional lawyer who adds even greater depth and experience to our top-tier group,” says Miriam Wugmeister, Co-chair of Morrison & Foerster’s Global Privacy + Data Security Group. “Kristen will further help us meet the rapidly growing global demand for our counsel on privacy and data security matters.  Her broad practice will be invaluable to our clients as they navigate increasingly complex legal demands and challenges.”

Similar to many other Morrison & Foerster privacy and data security partners, Chambers USA, Chambers Global, and The Legal 500 all regularly rank Mathews as a top lawyer. Over the last decade, they have recognized her for her outstanding client service and extensive knowledge of the data privacy and cybersecurity space. Ms. Mathews’ accolades include being named to The Legal 500 Hall of Fame in the category of “cyber law.”

In 2005, Mathews was an early achiever of the Certified Information Privacy Professional certification bestowed by the International Association of Privacy Professionals. She is also a prolific writer and speaker on the topic of data privacy and cybersecurity.

“I am delighted to join Morrison & Foerster’s large global team of privacy and data security lawyers,” says Mathews. “The firm has a highly respected and well-established platform and a notable roster of clients. I look forward to helping further grow MoFo’s outstanding practice and to advising the firm’s clients on their critical privacy and data security needs.”

Morrison & Foerster’s Global Privacy + Data Security Group advises on a broad range of privacy and data protection matters. It counsels some of the largest and best-known global enterprises, including many of the world’s leading technology businesses, as well as numerous smaller organisations. The group’s services are used most by companies that operate in highly regulated sectors, such as financial services, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals, those with an online presence, and those operating internationally. The group is rated Band 1 by Chambers USA.
