SuMi TRUST marks three years at helm of SLI Japanese Growth Equity Fund

RELATED TOPICS

Standard Life Investments is celebrating three years with its strategic alliance partner, Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank (SuMi TRUST), at the helm of its GBP133m Japanese Equity Growth Fund.

During the three year period since SuMi TRUST took over the fund’s management (27 October 2013), it has produced top decile performance and returned 40.9 per cent to investors, versus the IMA Japan sector average of 29.4 per cent.

The largest asset manager in Japan and one of the leading investment managers in Asia, SuMi TRUST entered into a strategic alliance with Standard Life Investments in July 2010. The fund is managed by Shigeru Oshita, a 24-year industry veteran, and his Japan-based team of investment professionals. Oshita draws upon the stock analysis of a team of 26 analysts (the largest buy-side, in-house research team in Japan) with coverage of over 90 per cent of the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Oshita says: “Many Japanese companies are reporting robust earnings – a strength that is not always reflected in their share prices. We believe that the fundamentals of some companies oriented towards the domestic economy, including those operating in the retailing and services space, look relatively strong. In addition, domestic investments are gradually being stimulated by multiple sources and are showing signs of growth. These changing fundamentals may offer additional buying opportunities and we look forward to capitalising on these for our investors.

“Since Mr Abe regained the position of Prime Minister, we have experienced improving fundamentals in the Japanese economy. In spite of this there are still a number of companies that continue to struggle to generate sufficient returns to cover their costs. It is important to focus on quality companies, which are able to deliver positive change and are able to take advantage of the opportunities to upgrade their growth prospects. We continue to believe that a focus on active stock selection has the potential to generate attractive risk adjusted returns in the Japanese equity market.

“We focus on meeting companies and their senior management with our analyst team to identify changes, and generate and challenge investment ideas through rigorous debate with our research team. This collaborative work with our research team is vital in our ability to generate alpha at SuMi TRUST.”
