Volatility an opportunity for discerning investors, says Standard Life

RELATED TOPICS

Global fund manager Standard Life Investments believes that continued volatility in markets will offer opportunities for discerning investors against a backdrop of slow economic growth and weak inflation.

In its latest edition of Global Outlook, it says there will be slow economic growth and that the recovery will be more complex than in previous recessions.

This will involve a major re¬balancing of many economies as well as difficult decisions about the withdrawal of the exceptional policy stimulus.

Andrew Milligan (pictured), head of global strategy at Standard Life Investments, says: “As the global recession fades, the key question facing investors is how to take advantage of the global economic recovery in 2010. Given the prospect of continued market and economic uncertainty we believe careful analysis of a number of macro issues will give discerning investors an opportunity to outperform during the next stage of the economic cycle. These include attitudes to household and corporate debt, monetary policy and fiscal tightening, coupled with consideration of respective asset class yields.”

Given the prospect of continued market and economic volatility Standard Life Investments believes that secure and sustainable yield remains an important approach to asset allocation and making investment decisions.

Several asset classes now provide a running yield well above cash or government bonds and investors should factor this into their considerations, along with the changing dynamics facing commercial property, when reviewing investment plans.

The house view prefers a well diversified portfolio of high quality corporate bonds, equity income and commercial property yield.
