A monthly column on the crypto markets and ETF/ETP flows, brought to you by CoinDesk Indices, Trackinsight and ETF Express.
Digital-asset investment products recorded USD4.88 billion in net inflows in August, down from USD13.14 billion in July, according to TrackInsight data. The step-down in totals came alongside a modest improvement in market breadth, setting a more measured tone for the start of Q3.
Index performance
The CoinDesk 5 Index (CD5), which tracks the five largest digital assets by market cap and liquidity, closed 1,961.6 (−2.03 per cent).
The broader CoinDesk 20 Index (CD20) rose 2.99 per cent to 3,971.1, underscoring comparatively stronger participation beyond the mega-caps.
The divergence between mega-caps and the wider large-cap set persisted through month-end.
Asset flows
Ether-linked products attracted USD4.27 billion, the strongest monthly intake this year and ~88 per cent of August’s net inflows, driven primarily by US-listed funds.
Bitcoin products saw USD169.1 million in net outflows at the category level, despite issuer-level dispersion. Solana and XRP products recorded inflows of USD383.4 million and USD279.7 million, respectively, signalling selective diversification beyond BTC and ETH.
Flows by geography
Americas: USD4.92 billion in net inflows, continuing to anchor global allocations and trading.
Europe: USD108 million in net outflows, reflecting softer demand across several markets.
APAC: USD70.4 million in net inflows, with incremental gains led by Hong Kong and Australia.
Flows by currency
USD-denominated products again led activity, comprising ~94 per cent of global trading volumes.
Minor inflows were seen in CAD- and AUD-denominated funds.
EUR and SEK products continued to register redemptions.
CHF and NZD remained broadly flat.
Largest ETF movers
iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA): +USD3.47 billion – largest single-product intake of the month.
iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT): +USD715.1 million.
Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC): -USD657.8 million & Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC): -USD288.7 million; underscoring dispersion across top issuers despite the US’s overall strength.
Outlook
Digital-asset ETPs enter September with ETH-led momentum, select altcoin participation, and a regional skew favouring the Americas.
Key watchpoints: durability of ETH allocations, a potential re-acceleration in BTC demand, and whether regional dispersion narrows as product shelves evolve.
Despite the monthly slowdown, the structural trend of institutional adoption remains intact.
